The Curse of the wulfen – early impressions of the second chapter

Yesterday I wrote about my impressions which were basically about the first chapter of the book. I just read the second one and these are my thoughts about it.

The chapter starts with the grey knights getting notice of the chaos warp storms in the area and they decide to sent a task force to the area. The first contact of the Knights with the actions only reveal a left behind body damaged beyond recognition and a sign of the space wolves on the armor. Stern which is the leader of the force decides to go after the great wolf to have a sincere word with him.

The next scene is about the clash of wolves and and dark angels on the world of tranquilitus. Even though both chapters do not shoot on each both sides do not hold back anything in the race to be the first who finds the wulfen. The dark angels actually find them first, trap them and then the wolves arrive. They exchange some rather unfriendly words and then they are attacked by demons. The wolves basically use the distraction to leave the planet with the wulfen leaving the dark angels behind them on the planets surface fighting the demons.

This is basically the first scene which is rather controversial. Did the wolves betrayed the dark angels when they left them behind ?

I don’t think so. The dark angels could not expect a second force on the planet. So they where responsible to bring everything to that mission which was needed to accomplish it.Secondly the motives of the dark angels where not that heroic in my opinion.They saw a chance to blame the wolves and where angry they lost. And thirdly, they jealously take care that no one have to much insight into stuff what they consider as „Their Business“. They should do the same with topics that the wolves consider as „Their Business“.

 

The next scene is between Brother Captain Stern and his Grey Knights and Logan Grimnar and his Champions of Fenris. Both sides finally meet each other after intensive combat against demons in a hall and have a chat. Stern accuses the space wolves of harbouring mutants, leaving war zones at great cost of the imperium and finally being cowards. Grimnar warns the brother-caption not to to cross the red line. Stern says that the wulfen are tainted by the chaos and should therefore handed over to the Grey Knights. Grimnar refuses the demand because the wulfen are kin and therefore could not handed over. Stern philosophizes about the possibility to take them by force and about the great number of casualties this would cost. Grimnar laughs at Stern and tells him the wolves would not take that many casualties. Stern then tells the space wolves that their home system have been hit by a invasion. After the wolves checked the information both sides agree to postpone the decision about the wulfen until the immediate thread, the chaos invasion, is solved.

I got the impression while reading that logan believes that the grey knights would take good care of the wulfen, but toher institutions like the inquisition possibly not. The talking about to take the wulfen by force is in my opinion totally unnecessary at this point. Stern should know that he has not the military power to fight against the wolves so there’s really no need to say something like this.

 

So both sides start their journey to a rally point in a nearby system where they meet some other space wolves great companies. Soon they discover that this much wulfen at one point seems to cause anger and violence among the space wolves crews.This is basically the point when the wolves realize that their brothers could also be a curse to the wolves.

Well, which option do the wolves have at this point ? In my opinion not too many. They could now hand over the wulfen to the grey knights or continue. Its now obviously that the wulfen can cause problems. But is that really enough to hand them over ? Probably not.

The Curse of the wulfen – very early first impressions

I now own the „ Curse of the wulfen“ for about three hours. Not enough time to actually review the book, but to write down some very early thoughts about what i have read and seen so far.

If you consider buying the book this is your first and last warning. The following sentences will include spoilers. So consider yourself warned.

Ok, obviously you’re still reading.

The first difference i noticed is the change of art style as i browsed through the book. The overall style is much cleaner and the colour is more vibrant as in the old one. It looks more cartoonic and less dark. I like the old style, but i’m ok with the new one.

The story as i have read it so far is entertaining and thrilling. You get introduced to the ancient old conflict between the thousand sons and the space wolves , the 13th company and the second conflict zone with chaos and imperials .

The book tells you how Harald Deathwolf makes first contact with the wulfen and how they get integrated within the ranks of the space wolves .

Some reviews i read actually complained about that the space wolves not beeing not skeptical enough about the wulfen and that they welcomed them to quick despite the consequences this action might have.

And i actually disagree with this statement. Harald Deathwulf actually utters more than one time his doubts about the true nature of the wulfen. At the gathering of the wolf lords the opinions about them range from „Russ is coming“ over „lets welcome them until the show hostile“ to „lets use them as potent mass destruction weapon“. So the leaders of the wolves are in my opinion more than aware about the possible danger the wulfen could be.

The only critique i have with this scene is actually why everyone wants to talk to Björn. Ok he’s a ancient old cybot but its not that clear so far why he actually could add anything new to the amount of information . Maybe it will get clearer when i progress through the book. The other strange statement is Urik saying that the arrive of the wulfen states that russ is coming. As the other lords demand proves he cannot prove it. I can understand that this is just a statement of hope , but its a little bit…naive for a person like Ulrik. In the end Logan says that they will welcome the wulfen and consider them as the lost brothers. For now.

In the subsequent chapters the wolves spread around the surrounding space system to gather the wulfen. They concentrate on the warp storms which cause havoc throughout them. Theres also a short passage which describes how the Dark Angels got first information about the wulfen.

So far, so good. I like it. Despite in my opinion minor flaws its a entertaining book so far. Stay tuned until i can tell more about it. Also be aware that my opinions about what i read so far can change when i  progress through the book. All subject to change 🙂

Finished Sicaran Battletank

How to paint tank tracks

Due to the demand of @resinjunkie theres a short tutorial how i did the tank tracks on my sicaran battle tank.

Colors you will need:

• Chaos Black
• Leadbelcher
• Mithril Silver (old) or Runefang Steel (new)
• Nuln Oil (wash)
• Vermin Brown (old) or Skrag Brown (new)

Everything was applied on a white basecoat but if you use black it just will come out a little bit darker. Everything was applied with an airbrush except for the wash.

1) Basecoat with “Leadbelcher”.
2) Generous coat with “Nuln Oil”. Be sure that the wash dried. Nothing is more annoying than mess up everything because its still liquid.
3) Sprayed a 50/50 mix of “Chaos Black”/”Leadbelcher” at the center of each chain element.
4) Carefull drybrush on the knuckle points and the edges of the chain element.
5) The last step is a heavily thinned down coat with “Vermin Brown”. Be a little conservative with the first coat. You can always apply more if you think its too less. Basically you can use whatever color you want to simulate the dirt.

Runepriest on Thunderwolf

Today i can present you a model on which have painted the last two weeks. Because i wanted to try out the rune priest on bike the idea came to me that i could use the ” Wolf count as Bike” possibility. Some of you will recognize the lower part of the model. Its a Thunderwolf model i had painted some month ago. Because if only have three of them they didn´t see that much action. The Toros is magnetized so i can swap them as i like.

Wolf Guard reinforcements

Today i can show you my two newest additions to my wolf guards. With them the wolf guard is now 10 men strong including arjac rockfist. Reaching ten men strong makes it possible to fit two cyclone missile launchers ( from Anvil Industries) on my terminators.  The bases were made with the same process as all of my bases. So nothing new there. So theres only to wish you fun with the pictures !

Heute kann ich euch zwei Neuzugänge für die Wolfsgarde vorstellen. Damit ist die Wolfsgarde auf eine größe von 10 Mann, inklusive Arjac Felsenfaust, angewachsen. Dies ermöglicht es mir auch, die zwei abgebildeten Cyclone Launcher von Anvil Industries zu verwenden. Die Bases sind nach dem vor ein paar Wochen vorgestellten Verfahren angefertigt worden. Dann bleibt mir noch euch viel Spaß mit den Bildern zu wünschen !

Grey Hunters – Special Weapons WIP#1

So , today i have only a small hobby update of my current projects. Currently I’m working on some special weapons (plasma) for my grey hunters. In the past most of my squads used melters as special weapons but with the current edition there seems to be that plasma weapons are the way to go. I want to give it a try so we will see.

Stormeagle finished

So, its time to get an update on the process of my storm eagle gunship. Its about 3 month since i got the storm eagle from Forgeworld. A long time ago, in a galaxy far away…rhm…wrong movie ….

So, es wird mal wieder Zeit euch auf den neusten Stand der Dinge  im Falle Storm Eagle zu bringen. Nun ist es ja fast drei Monate her, seit ich den Bausatz von Forgeworld bekommen habe.

The finally finished drop pod

Good things come to those who wait. As a reminder there is the link to the second post. I think , I never needed that much time to finish a model. From the beginning of the assembly to the fully painted model it has taken over two years.
But now to the pictures of the finally finished drop pod. As always, criticism and of course standing ovations are welcome.

So, was länge währt wird endlich gut.  Hier nochmal als Gedächtnissstütze der Link zum zweiten Post.  Ich glaube, so lange habe ich noch nie für ein Model gebraucht. Vom Zusammenbau bis jetzt sind doch mehr als zwei Jahre vergangen.
Aber nun zu den Bildern der endlich fertiggestellten Landungskapsel. Kritik und Applaus sind natürlich wie immer willkommen 🙂

Der Stormeagle #WIP 2

So, heute habe ich für euch etwas Fortschritt an meinem Stormeagle. Im letzten Post waren ja noch Bilder des ungrundierten Stormeagles zu sehen. Ich habe mittlerweile mit der Bemalung begonnen und bin bisher ganz zufrieden mit den gemachten Fortschritten.

Ich habe mit den Flügeln begonnen, mich dann auf den hinteren oberen Rumpf voran gearbeitet und dann das Heck in Angriff genommen. Bisher bin ich mit den Ergebnissen ganz zufrieden. In einigen Bereichen ist das Blau etwas arg streifig geworden. Hier werde ich wohl noch etwas nacharbeite leisten müssen. Im allgemeinen ist die Bemalung nicht so einfach, da das Modell einfach zu groß ist um es bequem in alle Richtungen drehen zu können. Aber mit etwas mehr Nacharbeitung lassen sich die größten Fehler glücklicherweise ausbügeln 🙂

Auch wenn die Bilder sicherlich nicht die besten sind, die ich jemals gemacht habe vermitteln sie doch einen ganz guten Eindruck , wohin sich das Model entwickelt. Sicherlich wird es meinen Land-Raidern in nichts nachstehen.

Dann bleibt mir nur noch euch viel Spaß mit den Bildern zu wünschen !

Der Stormeagle #WIP 1 ( viele Bilder)

Schon als das Model herausgekommen ist wusste ich, dass ich den Flieger haben musste. Die neuen Fliegerregeln haben dann ihr übriges getan. Und da die Wölfe ansonsten ja leider was die Flugunterstützung angeht etwas Schwach auf der Brust sind war nur ein weiterer Grund.

Hier ist er also . Mein neuer Stormeagle !

Ich werde die nächsten Wochen ein paar Artikel zum Bausatz an sich und dem Zusammenbau der einzelnen Teile posten. Heute gibt es aber erstmal eine ganze Menge Bilder des noch ungrundierten Bausatzes. Der Zusammenbau war nicht einfach und teilweise sogar wirklich schwierig. Großen Spaß hat es dennoch gemacht ! Fast anderthalb Monate hat es dennoch gedauert um das unten zu sehende Ergebnis zu erreichen.

Nun bleibt mir nur noch euch Spaß beim betrachten der Bilder zu wünschen !

Predator “Leman Russ” der Großkompanie Egil Eisenwolfes

Als ich damit angefangen habe die Space Wolfes zu spielen wollte ich auf jedenfall einen Predator in ihren Reihen haben. Auch wenn der originale Predator nicht schlecht aussieht konnte ich der Versuchung nicht widerstehen, einen Leman Russ als Basis eines Umbaus zu verwenden. In einem der früheren Kodizes durften ihn die Space Wolfes ja noch als 0-1 Auswahl einsetzen. Der Panzer hat mir bei verschiedenen Gelegenheiten gute Dienste geleistet, auch wenn er in der letzen Zeit zunehmend zugunsten anderer Einheiten Platz machen musste.

Donnerwolf-Kavallerie #4 – Nachtrag

Gaston hatte ja in diesem Post über den letzten fertigstellten Donnerwolf angemerkt, dass der Übergang von Kopf zu den Ohren nicht ganz perfekt wäre. Nachdem ich etwas darüber nachgedacht und die Bilder noch einmal in Augenschein genommen habe, musste ich ihm in diesem Punkt zustimmen. Also das Green Stuff herausgekramt und versucht, den Makel etwas zu vermindern. Sehen wir mal, ob mir das gelungen ist.

Wie ich finde, ist mir das auch ganz gut gelungen .

An der ein oder anderen Stelle gab es noch etwas abrieb, den ich mittlerweile auch korrigiert habe. Da ich meine Figuren nicht mit Lack überziehe muss man das von Zeit zu Zeit halt ausbessern. Einen Nachteil gibt es halt immer 🙂
